How to Remove the Title field from a SharePoint List

SharePoint does not allow us to delete the column and also allows us to change the data type of the column. We can rename or hide or remove the title field from a SharePoint list. A step-by-step guide on How to Remove, Rename, or Hide the title field from a SharePoint List.


A SharePoint list is a collection of data that is stored in a SharePoint site and can be easily accessed, managed, and edited by multiple users. Lists can be used to store various types of information such as contacts, tasks, calendar events, and more. SharePoint lists are similar to tables in a database and can be customized to fit specific needs. They can also be linked to other lists and libraries and can be integrated with other features of SharePoint such as workflow and alerts


Steps to Remove the Title field from a SharePoint list

The Title column is a default metadata column used in the content types for both a Document and an Item content type. These columns exist in every new library and you cannot delete them from the standard column lists.


Follow the below steps to remove the title field from a SharePoint list:


STEP 1: Here I have created the SharePoint list. By default, the title column appears in the list. See the below image:



STEP 2: Go to the "list settings" page and click on "General settings".



STEP 3: Now, click on "Advanced settings".



STEP 4: Here select "Yes" to enable "allow management of content type". Click OK to save the settings.



STEP 5: Go back to "list settings" and click on "Item" under content types.



STEP 6: Now, click on the "Title".



Check the "Hidden (Will not appear in forms)" box and click OK.



STEP 7: Go back to the list and check whether the title field disappeared in the SharePoint list or not.


Steps to Rename the Title field from the SharePoint list

We cannot delete the column but can rename the Title field and make the column as not required. Follow the below steps to rename the Title field:


STEP 1: Go to "List Settings". Click on "Item" under content types and then click on "Title".


STEP 2: Under the Columns section, click on the "Title column".




STEP 3: Change the Column name. (See the below image)



STEP 4: Click on Save to save the settings.
